In the spring of 1946, Dan Trop, a young college educated WWII veteran from upstate New York , moved out west to Southern California . Having worked at his uncle’s ice cream company as a young man, he learned a great deal about the ice cream business. Dan was captivated by the warmer climates out west and envisioned the possibilities of mobile ice cream vending and the success that it could bring.

Dan started his business in San Bernardino , California with just a handful of motorized carts. He eventually purchased over 30 new and used trucks and converted them all into ice cream trucks. He also called some of the ice cream manufacturers he knew and started purchasing amounts that were unheard of at the time, literally becoming his own company. Families were now able to enjoy tasty treats delivered right to their doorstep. At that time he had no idea that he would be part of the largest revolution in the ice cream business.

Dan continued to grow and expanded his business by setting up 14 ice cream commissaries throughout the State of California . Dan and his company eventually merged with an existing company called Good Humor of California, a company that Dan headed until 1968 when he sold it to Good Humor of New York and the Breyers Corporation.

Of all the commissaries Dan set up, the largest was the one his son, Mark, owned and operated called Dandy Boy Incorporated. Mark Trop was an innovator in the ice cream business himself. He began setting up the trucks differently to sell more of a variety of products, ice cream and non ice cream. Candy and snacks became just as popular of an item as ice cream, and the demand for products left Mark having no choice but to expand.
